SBE 16plus Strain Gauge Pressure Sensor Options
16p-2a 20 m strain gauge pressure sensor Pressure sensor is installed in connector end cap, & is not field replaceable / swappable. While highest pressure rating gives you most flexibility in using 16plus, it is at expense of accuracy & resolution. It is advantageous to use lowest range pressure sensor compatible with your intended maximum operating depth, because accuracy & resolution are proportional to pressure sensor's full scale range. For example, comparing 2000 & 7000 m sensors --
  • 2000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 2 m (= 0.1% * 2000 m),
    resolution = 0.04 m (= 0.002% * 2000 m)
  • 7000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 7 m (= 0.1% * 7000 m),
    resolution = 0.14 m (= 0.002% * 7000 m)

SBE 16plus Digiquartz Pressure Sensor Options (substitutes for strain gauge option)

16p-2h 45 psia Digiquartz with temperature compensation Digiquartz pressure sensors provide better accuracy (0.02% of full scale range vs 0.1% of full scale range) & resolution (Digiquartz resolution dependent on user-programmable integration time) than strain gauge pressure sensors. SBE 16plus Auxiliary Input Channel Configuration Selections -- MUST SELECT ONE
16p-3a 4 differential A/D channels (0 - 5 volt input range) Auxiliary sensors (dissolved oxygen, fluorometer, transmissometer, etc.) plug into bulkhead connectors on 16plus connector end cap.
  • 16p-3a provides 2 bulkhead connectors, each supporting 2 differential A/D channels (differential A/D channel is differentially amplified to reject noise).
  • 16p-3b provides 1 bulkhead connector for 2 differential A/D channels, 1 bulkhead connector for third differential A/D channel, & 1 bulkhead connector for PAR sensor.
  • 16p-3c provides 2 bulkhead connectors, each supporting 2 differential A/D channels, & 1 bulkhead connector for an RS-232 sensor (SBE 38 temperature sensor, SBE 50 pressure sensor, or Gas Tension Device).

Note: 16p-3a, -3b, & -3c do not include auxiliary sensors, mounts, or interface cables.

  • See Third Party portion of price list for ordering details on fluorometers, transmissometers, turbidity meters, PAR sensors, etc. that are compatible with 16plus. These sensors can be purchased from Sea-Bird & integrated with 16plus at our factory. Alternatively, you can purchase sensors from third party manufacturers, purchase mount kits & cables from Sea-Bird, & perform integration yourself.

User can change sensors on 16plus in field, if combination is compatible with auxiliary channel configuration selection. However, bulkhead connector(s) that support 2 differential A/D channels each require Y-cables to connect auxiliary sensors to 16plus; each Y-cable is unique to sensors being integrated, so changing sensors may require changing Y-cable. In addition, sensor mechanical mountings may need to be changed to suit selected combination of sensors.

SBE 16plus Submersible Pump Options
16p-4a Add SBE 5M pump for sensor flushing, Standard XSG/RMG connectors (includes cable & mount) SBE 5M pump is intended for providing pumped conductivity only. Pump provides better conductivity response & anti-foulant protection than non-pumped configuration. Larger, more powerful SBE 5T is required if also planning to pump auxiliary sensors (such as dissolved oxygen, etc.).

Pump bulkhead connector on 16plus is standard, so pump can be added in the field without requiring any modifications to 16plus. These all include pump, pump mount, & pump interface cable. 16p-4c & 4d include pump cable compatible with wet-pluggable bulkhead connectors on 16plus & on pump.

Pump (SBE 5M or 5T) is titanium, regardless of 16plus housing option, & is rated for 10,500 m.

SBE 16plus Wet-Pluggable Connector Options

16p-5a Substitute Wet-pluggable (MCBH) connectors for Standard (XSG) connectors on SEACAT data, pump, A/D channel connections, and data I/O cable Wet-pluggable connectors may be mated in wet conditions. Their pins do not need to be dried before mating. By design, water on the connector pins is forced out as the connector is mated. However, they must not be mated or un-mated while submerged. Wet-pluggable connectors have a non-conducting guide pin to assist pin alignment & require less force to mate, making them easier to mate reliably under dark or cold conditions, compared to our standard (Impulse XSG/RMG) connectors. Like standard connectors, wet-pluggables need proper lubrication & require care during use to avoid trapping water in sockets.

 

16p-5_ options include data I/O cable compatible with wet-pluggable data I/O bulkhead connector.

  • 16p-5a requires 16p-3a (4 A/D channels).
  • 16p-5b requires 16p-3b (3 A/D & 1 log amp channel).
  • 16p-5c requires 16p-3c (4 A/D & 1 RS-232 channel).

SBE 16plus Dissolved Oxygen Sensor Options
16p-7a SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor (Mooring Configuration), 7000 m (cable & mount included, requires option 16p-4b) See SBE 43 specification sheet for sensor description.

Mooring Configuration differs from Profiling Configuration as follows:

  • Mooring configuration uses black plenum in place of white plenum, and black Tygon tubing (PN 31450) in place of clear Tygon tubing for plumbing, to reduce bio-fouling.
  • Mooring configuration uses 1 mil membrane in place of 0.5 mil membrane, to enhance long-term stability.

SBE 43 connector type (standard or wet-pluggable) must match 16plus connector type. SBE 43 is plumbed in line between conductivity sensor & pump; consequently, system requires more powerful SBE 5T pump (16p-4b or -4d) instead of 5M pump (16p-4a or -4c).

SBE 43 is available in 7000 m titanium (16p-7a or -7b) or 600 m plastic (16p-7c or -7d) housing.

16p-7_ includes SBE 43, mount, & straight cable to connect sensor to 16plus bulkhead connector. If connecting 2 sensors to 1 bulkhead connector, extra charge to substitute Y-cable applies in addition to 16p-7_ price.

Additional sensors not listed here ‑- fluorometers, transmissometers, turbidity meters, PAR sensors, etc. from third party manufacturers ‑- are compatible with 16plus. These sensors can be purchased from Sea-Bird & integrated with 16plus at our factory, or you can purchase mount kits & cables from Sea-Bird & perform integration yourself. 16p-7b SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor (Mooring Configuration) with Wet-pluggable connector, 7000 m (cable & mount included, requires option 16p-4d & 16p-5_)

SBE 16plus Alternate Serial Interface Option
16p-10 RS-485 (half duplex) serial interface (replaces RS-232 interface) Two-wire, RS-485 interface provides communication with individual 16plus or with all 16plus attached to RS-485 interface. This allows for coordination of sampling among many instruments. However, note that half-duplex communication is one-direction at a time (i.e., you cannot send commands & receive data at same time).

SBE 16plus Accessories
801542 AF24173 Anti-foulant Device (pair, bagged, labeled for shipping) (replaces PN 801347) Anti-foulant devices fit into anti-foulant device cups at each end of conductivity cell. Anti-foulant devices included with standard shipment; these are spares.
Useful life varies, depending on several factors. We recommend that customers consider more frequent replacement when high biological activity & strong current flow (greater dilution of the anti-foulant concentration) are present. Moored instruments in high growth & strong dilution environments have been known to obtain a few months of quality data, while drifters that operate in non-photic, less turbid deep ocean environments may achieve years of quality data. Experience may be strongest determining factor in specific deployment environments.
80291 9-cell series alkaline battery pack (solder connected) Batteries are easily accessed by unscrewing battery end cap. 16plus comes standard with 9 D cell alkaline batteries (nominal 14 Ah), but can be powered with Electrochem lithium batteries for more power intensive / longer deployments.

Note: Sea-Bird does not supply Electrochem lithium batteries; you must purchase them elsewhere (see WGT's website for purchasing information). Shipping restrictions apply for Electrochem lithium batteries & assembled battery packs.
