SBE 16plus-IM SEACAT C-T (Pressure optional) Recorder (Inductive Modem)
Configuration Details

Communicating with 1 or more 16plus-IMs requires use of Sea-Bird Surface Inductive Modem (SIM), which provides serial interface (RS-232 or RS-485) between user’s computer & up to 100 IM instruments coupled to single cable. Purchase SIM & optional Inductive Cable Coupler (ICC) separately; see separate listing.

SBE 16plus-IM Auxiliary Input Channel Configuration Selections -- MUST SELECT ONE

• 16PIM-3a provides 2 bulkhead connectors, each supporting 2 differential A/D channels (differential A/D channel is differentially amplified to reject noise).
• 16PIM-3b provides 1 bulkhead connector for 2 differential A/D channels, 1 bulkhead connector for third differential A/D channel, & 1 bulkhead connector for PAR sensor.
• 16PIM-3c provides 2 bulkhead connectors, each supporting 2 differential A/D channels, & 1 bulkhead connector for an RS-232 sensor (SBE 38 temperature sensor, SBE 50 pressure sensor, or Gas Tension Device).

Note: 16PIM-3a, -3b, & -3c do not include auxiliary sensors, mounts, or interface cables.

These sensors can be purchased from Sea-Bird & integrated with 16plus-IM at our factory. Alternatively, you can purchase sensors from third party manufacturers, purchase mount kits & cables from Sea-Bird, & perform integration yourself.

User can change sensors on 16plus-IM in field, if combination is compatible with auxiliary channel configuration selection. However, bulkhead connector(s) that support 2 differential A/D channels each require Y-cables to connect auxiliary sensors to 16plus-IM; each Y-cable is unique to sensors being integrated, so changing sensors may require changing Y-cable. In addition, sensor mechanical mountings may need to be changed to suit selected combination of sensors.

• 2000 m sensor:
  initial accuracy = 2 m (= 0.1% * 2000 m),
  resolution = 0.04 m (= 0.002% * 2000 m)
• 7000 m sensor:
  initial accuracy = 7 m (= 0.1% * 7000 m),
  resolution = 0.14 m (= 0.002% * 7000 m)

SBE 16plus-IM Digiquartz Pressure Sensor Options (substitutes for strain gauge option)

Pressure sensor is installed in connector end cap, & is not field replaceable / swappable. While highest pressure rating gives you most flexibility in using 16plus-IM, it is at expense of accuracy & resolution. It is advantageous to use lowest range pressure sensor compatible with your intended maximum operating depth, because accuracy & resolution are proportional to pressure sensor's full scale range. For example, comparing 2000 psia (1400 m) & 6000 psia (4200 m) sensors --

• 2000 psia (1400 m) sensor:
  initial accuracy = 0.28 m (= 0.02% * 1400 m)
• 6000 psia (4200 m) sensor:
  initial accuracy = 0.84 m (= 0.02% * 4200 m)

Pump bulkhead connector on 16plus-IM is standard, so pump can be added in the field without requiring any modifications to 16plus-IM. These all include pump, pump mount, & pump interface cable. 16PIM-5c & 5d include pump cable compatible with wet-pluggable bulkhead connectors on 16plus-IM & on pump.

Pump (SBE 5M or 5T) is titanium, regardless of 16plus-IM housing option, & is rated for 10,500 m.

• 16PIM-6a requires 16PIM-3a (4 A/D channels).

• 16PIM-6b requires 16PIM-3b (3 A/D & 1 log amp channel).

• 16PIM-6c requires 16PIM-3c (4 A/D & 1 RS-232 channel).

Mooring Configuration differs from Profiling Configuration as follows (photo shows SBE 16plus integrated with SBE 43; 16plus-IM is similar):

• Mooring configuration uses black plenum in place of white plenum, and black Tygon tubing (PN 31450) in place of clear Tygon tubing for plumbing, to reduce bio-fouling.
• Mooring configuration uses 1 mil membrane in place of 0.5 mil membrane, to enhance long-term stability.

SBE 43 connector type (standard or wet-pluggable) must match 16plus-IM connector type. SBE 43 is plumbed in line between conductivity sensor & pump; consequently, system requires more powerful SBE 5T pump (16PIM-5b or -5d) instead of 5M pump (16PIM-5a or -5c).

SBE 43 is available in 7000 m titanium (16PIM-7a or -7b) or 600 m plastic (16PIM-7c or -7d) housing.

16PIM-7_ includes SBE 43, mount, & straight cable to connect sensor to 16plus-IM bulkhead connector. If connecting 2 sensors to 1 bulkhead connector, extra charge to substitute Y-cable applies in addition to 16PIM-7 price.
