19plus SEACATplus PROFILER Pumped Conductivity, Temperature, Depth Recorder - Includes SBE 5M submersible pump, 8 MB memory, 2.5 m data I/O cable (PN 801225), SEASOFT software, & complete documentation. Specify: housing, pressure sensor, & auxiliary channel selections. Configurations that include pumped SBE 43 or other pumped auxiliary sensors require SBE 5T; see option 19p-4.

19plus in standard plastic housing with standard SBE 5M pump & associated plumbing (plumbing configuration shown for 19plus to be deployed in vertical orientation)

19plus is intended primarily as a profiling CTD, sampling at 4 Hz, but can also be used in moored mode to obtain long-term time series data. 19plus is powered by internal batteries, & records data in memory.

In addition, in profiling mode, 19plus can be deployed:

  • With SBE 36 CTD Deck Unit & Power Data Interface Module (PDIM), which provide power & real-time data handling capability over single-conductor sea cables. For PDIM, specify 19p-9a or -9b; order SBE 36 separately.
  • With SBE 32 Carousel Water Sampler & SBE 33 Deck Unit, which provide power, real-time data handling capability, & real-time water sampler control over single-conductor sea cables. Order SBE 32 (32, 32C, or 32SC) & SBE 33 separately.
  • With SBE 32 Carousel Water Sampler & Auto Fire Module (AFM), which provide autonomous water sampling capability. Order SBE 32 (32, 32C, or 32SC) & AFM (by selecting appropriate Carousel operating mode configuration in 32, 32C, or 32SC listing) separately.

SBE 19plus Housing (depth rating) Selections -- MUST SELECT ONE

19p-1a 600 m plastic housing Pump (SBE 5M standard or SBE 5T optional) is titanium, regardless of housing option, & is rated for 10,500 m.
19p-1b 7000 m titanium housing
SBE 19plus Strain Gauge Pressure Sensor Selections -- MUST SELECT ONE
19p-2a 20 m strain gauge pressure sensor Pressure sensor is installed in connector end cap, & is not field replaceable / swappable. While highest pressure rating gives you most flexibility in using 19plus, it is at expense of accuracy & resolution. It is advantageous to use lowest range pressure sensor compatible with your intended maximum operating depth, because accuracy & resolution are proportional to pressure sensor's full scale range. For example, comparing 2000 & 7000 m sensors --
  • 2000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 2 m (= 0.1% * 2000 m),
    resolution = 0.04 m (= 0.002% * 2000 m)
  • 7000 m sensor:
    initial accuracy = 7 m (= 0.1% * 7000 m),
    resolution = 0.14 m (= 0.002% * 7000 m)
19p-2b 100 m strain gauge pressure sensor
19p-2c 350 m strain gauge pressure sensor
19p-2h 600 m strain gauge pressure sensor
19p-2d 1000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
19p-2e 2000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
19p-2f 3500 m strain gauge pressure sensor
19p-2g 7000 m strain gauge pressure sensor
SBE 19plus Auxiliary Analog Channel Configuration Selections (for optional sensors) -- MUST SELECT ONE
19p-3a 4 differential A/D channels (0 - 5 volt input range) Auxiliary sensors (dissolved oxygen, pH, fluorometer, transmissometer, etc.) plug into bulkhead connectors on 19plus connector end cap.
  • 19p-3a provides 2 bulkhead connectors, each supporting 2 differential A/D channels (differential A/D channel is differentially amplified to reject noise).
  • 19p-3b provides 1 bulkhead connector for 2 differential A/D channels, 1 bulkhead connector for third differential A/D channel, & 1 bulkhead connector for PAR sensor.

Note: 19p-3a & -3b do not include auxiliary sensors, mounts, or interface cables.

  • See SBE 19plus Auxiliary Sensor and Integration Options below for ordering and integrating SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor, SBE 18 pH Sensor, or SBE 27 pH/ORP Sensor with 19plus.
  • See Third Party portion of price list for ordering details on fluorometers, transmissometers, turbidity meters, PAR sensors, etc. that are compatible with 19plus. These sensors can be purchased from Sea-Bird & integrated with 19plus at our factory. Alternatively, you can purchase sensors from third party manufacturers, purchase mount kits & cables from Sea-Bird, & perform integration yourself.

User can change sensors on 19plus in field, if combination is compatible with channel configuration selection. However, bulkhead connector(s) that support 2 differential A/D channels each require Y-cables to connect auxiliary sensors to 19plus; each Y-cable is unique to sensors being integrated, so changing sensors may require changing Y-cable. In addition, sensor mechanical mountings may need to be changed to suit selected combination of sensors.

19p-3b 3 differential A/D channels, 1 log amp channel (for PAR)
SBE 19plus Pump Option
19p-4 Substitute SBE 5T pump for SBE 5M pump Standard SBE 5M pump is intended for providing pumped conductivity only, for improved conductivity response over a non-pumped system. Larger, more powerful SBE 5T is required if also planning to pump auxiliary sensors (such as dissolved oxygen, etc.).
SBE 5T (as well as 5M) pump is titanium, regardless of 19plus housing option, & is rated for 10,500 m.

SBE 19plus Wet-Pluggable Connector Options

19p-5a Substitute all Wet-pluggable (MCBH) connectors for Standard (XSG) connectors when Option 19p-3a is specified (including pump and data I/O cable) Wet-pluggable connectors may be mated in wet conditions. Their pins do not need to be dried before mating. By design, water on connector pins is forced out as connector is mated. However, they must not be mated or un-mated while submerged. Wet-pluggable connectors have a non-conducting guide pin to assist pin alignment & require less force to mate, making them easier to mate reliably under dark or cold conditions, compared to our standard (Impulse XSG/RMG) connectors. Like standard connectors, wet-pluggables need proper lubrication & require care during use to avoid trapping water in sockets.

Both 19p-5 options include additional cost of wet-pluggable connectors on 19plus & pump, data I/O cable compatible with wet-pluggable data I/O connector, & pump cable with wet-pluggable connectors on both ends.

19p-5b Substitute all Wet-pluggable (MCBH) connectors for Standard (XSG) connectors when Option 19p-3b is specified (including pump and data I/O cable)
SBE 19plus Auxiliary Sensor and Integration Options
19p-6a SBE 43 Dissolved Oxygen Sensor (Profiling Configuration), 7000 m (cable & mount included, requires option 19p-4) General Information:
  • 19p-6, -7, & -8 include auxiliary sensor, mount, & straight cable to connect sensor to 19plus bulkhead connector. See auxiliary sensor specification sheets (SBE 43, 18, 27) for sensor descriptions. Auxiliary sensor connector type (standard or wet-pluggable) must match 19plus connector type.
  • If connecting 2 sensors to 1 bulkhead connector, YMOLD (to create a y-cable) applies in addition to 19p-6, -7, & -8 price.
  • Additional sensors not listed here ‑- fluorometers, transmissometers, turbidity meters, PAR sensors, etc. from third party manufacturers ‑- are compatible with 19plus. These sensors can be purchased from Sea-Bird & integrated with 19plus at our factory, or you can purchase mount kits & cables from Sea-Bird & perform integration yourself. See Third Party portion of price list.
  • User can change sensors on 19plus in field. However, as noted above, Y-cable is required to connect 2 auxiliary sensors to 1 bulkhead connector on 19plus; each Y-cable is unique to sensors being integrated, so changing sensors may require changing Y-cable. In addition, sensor mechanical mountings may need to be changed to suit selected combination of sensors.

Sensor-Specific Information:

  • SBE 43 -- Sensor is plumbed between conductivity sensor & pump. Consequently, system requires more powerful SBE 5T pump (19p-4) instead of standard 5M pump. SBE 43 is available in 7000 m titanium (19p-6a or -6b) or 600 m plastic (19p-6c or -6d) housing.

Moored Application Information:

  • SBE 43 -- If intending to use 19plus in moored application, contact Sea-Bird to specify integration with an SBE 43 in Moored Configuration instead of Profiling Configuration (1 mil membrane vs 0.5 mil membrane for enhanced long-term stability; black plenum vs white plenum, and black Tygon tubing vs clear Tygon tubing for plumbing, for reduced bio-fouling).
  • SBE 18 & SBE 27 -- Sensors are not recommended for use in moored applications. See Application Note 76: pH or pH/ORP Sensors and Moored Applications.

801542 AF24173 Anti-foulant Device (pair, bagged, labeled for shipping) (replaces PN 801347) Anti-foulant devices are typically used when 19plus is deployed on a mooring, instead of as a profiling CTD. Use of Anti-foulant devices requires installation of PN 50288 SBE 19plus Moored Mode Conversion Kit (see SBE 19plus Accessories above); anti-foulant devices fit into anti-foulant device cups at each end of conductivity cell.

Useful life varies, depending on several factors. We recommend that customers consider more frequent replacement when high biological activity & strong current flow (greater dilution of anti-foulant concentration) are present. Moored instruments in high growth & strong dilution environments have been known to obtain a few months of quality data, while drifters that operate in non-photic, less turbid deep ocean environments may achieve years of quality data. Experience may be strongest determining factor in specific deployment environments.

50087 Cell filler/storage device For cleaning conductivity cell after each use & storing instrument between uses. See document 67043  & Application Note 2D: Instructions for Care and Cleaning of Conductivity Cells.
